Ark. down to just 33 payday lenders, study says

The number of payday lenders operating in Arkansas has dropped by about 86 percent since the state’s top attorney threatened legal action over their high-interest loans, a new study says.

Arkansans Against Abusive Payday Lending, an advocacy group opposed to payday lending released a survey Thursday that says the number of payday lenders operating in the state has dropped from 237 in March to just 33.

Entergy’s Power to Care program helps less fortunate pay utility bill

Hot summer in a struggling economy has left more elderly and disabled customers than normal unable to pay their energy bills, nearly depleting the funds available to low-income Arkansans through Entergy Arkansas’s Power to Care program.

SGFF wins award from Entergy

On Wednesday, September 10, 2008, Entergy Arkansas presented Southern Good Faith Fund with the “Making Things Brighter Award in Community Leadership” at their Low-Income Advocates Leadership and Community Development Conference. This is an annual award to recognize contributions made in improving the lives of low-income families. SGFF is the first organization to receive this award, which has historically been given to an individual.

More People Seeking Help to Pay for Energy Bills

With prices going up across the board, requests for utility bill assistance have increased, according to officials who help pay energy bills.

“Five thousand or more people must have applied in the five counties served,” said Betty Smith, executive director of the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Economic Opportunities Commission.

The Power to Care program eases high cost of summer electric bills for many Arkansans

With summer temperatures reaching triple digits, many Arkansans have trouble paying their electric bills. Entergy Arkansas’ The Power to Care program, administered by Southern Good Faith Fund, provides financial assistance to eligible Entergy customers who are elderly or disabled and meet income guidelines.

Arkansas families casualties of souring economy

Nick and Gina Redford of Mabelvale are caught in the middle. Her salary is too high to qualify for public assistance but does not cover the bills associated with his liver disease and the rising cost of gasoline and food.

They have declared bankruptcy and face foreclosure on their home of 16 years.
